Born in 1951 in Newport, Phil Rogers lives and works in the beautiful countryside of Mid Wales. Having been a teacher of Art and Ceramics for almost five years Phil Rogers
established his first pottery in Rhayader in 1978. In 1984 he and his wife moved to Cefnfaes Farm on the outskirts of Rhayader where extra space and buildings allowed him the freedom to build various kilns including those for salt and for wood. 2008 marked 30 years as a professional potter.
Phil Rogers has written three books – ‘Ash Glazes’ in 1992, ‘Salt Glazing’ in 2002 and ‘Throwing Pots’ in 1995 and there have been many articles for various international magazines. The latest book – ‘Phil Rogers-potter’ is published in the USA by the Pucker Gallery of Boston. A new DVD has just been released as a two disc set which spends a year with Rogers in Japan, USA and at home and is currently available from the Goldmark Gallery in the UK. Rogers has also conducted 50 workshops in countries around the world including USA, UK, Germany, Korea, Canada, Israel, Malta and S. Africa
Phil Rogers is a fellow of the Craft Potters Association of Great Britain, a member of the International Academy of Ceramics and a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy. He is also a trustee of two charities, CPA Trust and Adopt a Potter both directly involved with promoting the careers of younger ceramic artists. In 1992 and 1993, just after the civil war, he visited Ethiopia twice in order to set up a pottery for local women.
There have been almost 50 one man shows in various countries including the USA, Japan, Korea, Holland and Canada and he has pieces of his work represented in 50 museum collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, Boston Museum of Fine Art, Museum of Modern Ceramics, Mashiko, Japan and the Royal Ontario Museum in Canada.
