Statement
Before completing post-graduate study at Goldsmiths’ College, London, I was mainly self-taught. I set up my own studio in 1978, combining potting with raising a family and teaching. Since 1989 I have worked full-time as a potter.
All of my work is thrown, manipulated, and assembled while fresh on the wheel to capture the soft organic quality of the clay and preserve that softness in the finished piece. Since the way I work calls for pots to be completed as they are made, I tend to make pots in small series or families rather than as a larger production process.
My inspiration comes from the natural world, celebrating the rhythms and creative forces of the earth and of the human body, all of which keep me thinking about the life in a pot made of clay. I also draw inspiration from classic forms from Korea, China, Japan and English Mediaeval pots. The work is slip-decorated stoneware fired once to 1300C in a wood/gas kiln.
