Physicality is the essence of my work. It is at the heart of our very existence and is the medium for our encounters with the world. It too inhabits the core of my pieces and shapes my direct experience of my interior. I am not merely adopting elements of the massive substance which forms our world, such an impression of physicality may seem easy, but capturing its essence is far harder. The memory of four thousand million years of life lurks within me, and it is that compass which guides my sense of flexibility and plasticity when I work.
I work using the technique of coil building which in its slow incremental growth mimics the natural world. Just as a small seed takes years to grow to a mature tree, my shapes grow little by little towards fulfillment, as my hands become part of the process.
I feel a synchronicity between my own bodily rhythms and the rhythm of the growth of the clay coils. I do not ‘use’ clay, I entrust myself to its nature and we become one.
