RESUME

Ardmore Ceramic Art is an internationally acclaimed ceramic studio, based in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, where colourful decorative ceramic art pieces are produced and marketed to collectors and dealers across the globe.

Ardmore provides tools and facilities as well as training and guidance to artists to create these amazing works. They are encouraged to pursue their own styles and mediums and through this, great diversity exists amongst the Ardmore works. From sculptors (who mould and shape the clay into brilliant shapes, figures and forms) to the painters (who paint animals and decorative designs), the artists come up with ceramic art that is incredibly unique and exquisite.

Ardmore began in 1985 when Fée Halsted started teaching her first student, Bonnie Ntshalintshali. Five years later, Bonnie and Fée won the Standard Bank Young Artist Award, at that time a crowning achievement. Since then Fée has trained and monitored over 100 artists, and discovered markets for their ceramics. Through exhibitions and the Auction houses of Sotheby’s, Bonham’s and Christie’s, Ardmore has been branded as a modern “collectable”. Ardmore also runs The Ardmore Excellence Fund, which receives a percentage of the sales from the art. This money provides education (especially with regard to HIV/AIDS awareness) and healthcare to the artists and their families.
