I have specialised in making hand built vessels using the technique of coil and pinching. My pieces are finely burnished with agate pebbles, then pit fired or saggar fired with wood-bark and dried aloe leaves.
I view my work as reflecting a fusion of ideas based on my own personal background and national cultural identity, blending archetypal elements of ancient European and Indian ceramic traditions with those of Africa. I am fascinated with the subtle possibilities of pattern making. With the formal elements of impressed line, textural contrast, positive and negative interplay and various complex constructions of symmetry, I strive to create a vocabulary of motifs in a style that can be identified as uniquely my own. |
