My fascination with the ceramic process is a major influence in my work. I am currently using bone-china with soluble salts as surface treatment. My aim in this work is to produce one-off pieces integrating technique and personal expression.
If I consider what quality I wish to produce using this technique, the word ethereal springs to mind; hence my concern with the whiteness, purity and delicacy of the body.
Although soluble materials are often avoided by ceramists due to their instability I find this to be advantageous with the soluble salts. The colours vary depending on the time they have stood in solution giving an incredibly wide range of hue to the expected results, and when used in conjunction with resist techniques of wax and latex, combined with their tendency to permeate the surface of the work a subtle water colour effect is achieved enhancing the ethereal quality I am aiming for.
