INSTITUTION

Ceramic Arts are our passion at The Clay Studio, a non-profit learning center in the heart of Old City Philadelphia. Our exhibitions, retail shop, classes, artist residencies and community outreach programs educate and inspire locally, nationally and internationally.

Founded in 1974 as an artist collective, The Clay Studio has evolved into one of the best centers for the support of artists and the creation of art in the United States. As a dynamic urban artistic community, The Clay Studio hosts four distinct residency programs, providing studio space for up to 55 artists. The Studio’s programs reflect the dual character of the organization: as a community centered institution involved with the life of the city and region, and as a national and international focal point for ceramic arts. Geared to all levels of interest and proficiency, the Studio’s programs are the most diverse of any ceramic art center in the world.

The Clay Studio is an institutional member of the International Academy of Ceramics. Of particular interest to IAC artists is the Studio’s Guest Artist-in-Residence Program. The Studio has hosted artists from over 35 countries, providing rare cultural exchange opportunities for both the visitor and the Clay Studio community. Residencies are generally two months in duration, with the Studio providing housing directly across the street, 24 hour access to the guest artist studio, some technical assistance and a monthly stipend.
