It is with great sadness that I need to inform everyone that our dear friend and colleague, Gwen Heeney, passed away yesterday. Gwen had been bravely battling cancer for a period of time and despite her extraordinary fighting spirit, that anyone who met this inspirational force of nature<\/p>\n

will recognize, finally succumbed. She was an internationally renowned ceramicist and sculptor who moved her practice from making domestis pottery and garden pots to making large scale sculpture after her MA at the RCA. She became one of the leading clay artists in the world using architectural brick; she was a founder member of WABA (the World Association of Brick Artists) and a member of the International Academy of Ceramics.<\/p>\n

She started working in the Ceramics department at Wolverhampton in 1998, joining us from the Ceramics department at Cardiff University. She was a committed teacher and generations of ceramics and glass students have been taught and encouraged by her to develop a love of the subject and to excel as artists and designers in their field. Gwen was renowned for her energy and enthusiasm; most importantly she supported us all to take risks to realise our dreams, that we often did not even know we had.<\/p>\n

C'est avec beaucoup de tristesse que je vous informe que notre che\u0300re amie et colle\u0300gue Gwen Heeney est de\u0301ce\u0301de\u0301e hier. Gwen a combattu courageusement le cancer pendant une longue pe\u0301riode. Malgre\u0301 son esprit combatif extraordinaire, que tous ceux ayant rencontre\u0301 cette force de la nature peuvent attester, elle a finalement succombe\u0301. Ce\u0301ramiste et sculptrice de renomme\u0301e internationale, elle a re\u0301oriente\u0301 sa pratique pour passer de ce\u0301ramiste spe\u0301cialise\u0301e dans la poterie domestique et les vasques de jardin, a\u0300 la production de sculptures de grande e\u0301chelle, apre\u0300s avoir obtenu son Master au Royal College of Arts. Elle est devenue une figure majeure, parmi les artistes ce\u0301ramistes du monde entier, dans l\u2019utilisation de la brique architecturale; elle fut membre fondatrice de WABA, \u00ab World Association of Bricks
Artists \u00bb (Association internationale des artistes de briques) et membre de l'Acade\u0301mie Internationale de la Ce\u0301ramique.<\/p>\r\n

Elle a quitte\u0301 le De\u0301partement Ce\u0301ramique de l\u2019Universite\u0301 de Cardiff pour inte\u0301grer celui de l\u2019Universite\u0301 de Wolverhampton en 1998. C\u2019e\u0301tait une enseignante de\u0301voue\u0301e, qui a forme\u0301 des ge\u0301ne\u0301rations d\u2019e\u0301tudiants a\u0300 la technique du verre et de la ce\u0301ramique et les a encourage\u0301s a\u0300 de\u0301velopper l\u2019amour de ces matie\u0300res et exceller dans leurs pratiques d\u2019artistes et de designers. Gwen e\u0301tait connue pour son e\u0301nergie et son enthousiasme. Surtout, elle nous a tous pousse\u0301 a\u0300 prendre des risques pour re\u0301aliser des re\u0302ves dont nous ignorions l\u2019existence.<\/p>\r\n
