Museum of Contemporary Cuban Ceramics

Ceramics and its artists benefited from the foundation on May 5, 1990 of an institution that has succeeded in visualizing, consolidating and enhancing this activity within the Cuban and international universe of the visual arts. A panoramic glance enables the appreciation of the typological diversity with representative pieces as regards formal achievement and conceptual proposal. Vessels, murals, sculptures, and installations have been treasured and are exhibited in a chronological display that defines the most important moments in the development of this art form.
Also diverse is the way in which the artists assume creativity. For instance, in the line of vessels stand out those with eventually more conventional morphological references, while other proposals search for ingenious and experimental solutions. The murals were solved in abstract or figurative language to express ideas that are very different from one another, according to the visual arts concept. As to the sculptures and installations, an extended liking for figuration is noticeable, in certain cases expressionistic. There is a recurrent link of several non-ceramic elements, supports and remaining resources to the clay volume used as essential material.
The inter-disciplinary nature of the works is likewise a distinctive aspect, since the artists contribute the tools of their technical education in painting, engraving, sculpture, and photography, among others. That is also the case with the dissimilar techniques and procedures: majolica, raku, use of metallic oxides, and everything that visually adds to the end result.
Likewise, the group, solo, panoramic, and monothematic exhibitions are an inseparable part of the history of the art form, its memory and present. The institution has become a sponsor of such showcases, which grant an opportunity to promote the artists and their work.
