\u00a0D\u00e8s 1903, Charles Fergus Binns a esquiss\u00e9 les plans d\u2019une collection de poterie au sein d\u2019Alfred University et il a en effet cr\u00e9\u00e9 un \u00ab\u00a0mus\u00e9e\u00a0\u00bb ou une collection d\u2019\u00e9tude dans un espace de la facult\u00e9 de c\u00e9ramique. Pr\u00e8s de 90 ans plus tard, en 1991, le Conseil d\u2019Administration de l\u2019universit\u00e9 a cr\u00e9\u00e9 le Museum of Ceramic Art at Alfred University et nomm\u00e9 l\u2019historienne de l\u2019art Margaret Carney directrice du Mus\u00e9e (de janvier 1991 \u00e0 mai 2002). Plus tard, dans les ann\u00e9es 90, son nom fut modifi\u00e9, devenant International Museum of Ceramic Art. \u00c0 la fin du printemps 2014, des travaux de construction d\u2019un b\u00e2timent ont \u00e9t\u00e9 engag\u00e9s, sous la houlette du bureau d\u2019architectes Kallmann, McKinnell & Wood (Boston), afin d\u2019h\u00e9berger le mus\u00e9e d\u2019art c\u00e9ramique. Ainsi s\u2019est ouverte une \u00e8re totalement nouvelle pour la c\u00e9ramique \u00e0 Alfred University. Renomm\u00e9 Alfred Ceramic Art Museum par le Conseil d\u2019administration en f\u00e9vrier 2015, ce nouveau b\u00e2timent dernier cri a \u00e9t\u00e9 offert par Marlin Miller, un m\u00e9c\u00e8ne visionnaire (Dr. Marlin Miller Jr., ancien dipl\u00f4m\u00e9 d\u2019Alfred University, promotion 1954, Docteur Honoris Causa 1989). Le Alfred Ceramic Art Museum \u00e0 Alfred University prend d\u00e9sormais un nouvel \u00e9lan, sous la direction de l\u2019artiste c\u00e9ramiste et enseignant Wayne Higby. Le mus\u00e9e a \u00e9tendu sa vocation \u00e9ducative et son engagement en faveur de l\u2019enrichissement des dimensions artistiques et acad\u00e9miques de l\u2019art c\u00e9ramique, tout en c\u00e9l\u00e9brant les arts visuels dans leur globalit\u00e9.<\/p>\r\n

Le catalogue de travaux de m\u00e9moires constitu\u00e9 par les artistes c\u00e9ramistes form\u00e9-e-s \u00e0 Alfred University est unique au monde.\u00a0Il repr\u00e9sente une part importante des collections et offre un point d\u2019entr\u00e9e important dans le d\u00e9veloppement progressif de la c\u00e9ramique contemporaine am\u00e9ricaine.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n

The Alfred Ceramic Art Museum at Alfred University houses nearly 8,000 ceramic objects ranging from small pottery shards recovered from ancient civilizations to modern and contemporary ceramic art. The primary mission of Alfred Ceramic Art Museum is to collect, preserve, conserve, research, interpret and exhibit ceramic art for aesthetic and educational purposes. The museum is a research and teaching facility, which offers an engagement in cultural history via ceramic art to the student, artist, scholar and collector as well as the local, national and international community.<\/p>\r\n

\u00a0Alfred University\u2019s well-known, multi-media art school is unique in owing its origins to ceramic art. The Alfred Ceramic Art Museum acknowledges this fact by celebrating all the visual arts within various aspects of its exhibition cycle, while concentrating its collection policy on ceramic art.<\/p>\r\n

In 1900, Charles Fergus Binns was appointed as the founding director of the New York State College of Clay Working and Ceramics at Alfred University, thus the study of ceramic art and science was established as an educational focus at the University and has remained so for over a century. Binns\u2019 teaching formed the foundation for the evolution of American ceramic art.<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n

A Brief History of the Museum:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0As early as 1903, Charles Fergus Binns began planning an Alfred University pottery collection and he did put together a \u201cmuseum\u201d or study collection in a space in the original ceramics building. Nearly ninety years later, in 1991, the University Board of Trustees formally established the Museum of Ceramic Art at Alfred with art historian Margaret Carney as director (1\/1991- 5\/2002).<\/p>\r\n

Later in the 1990\u2019s its name was changed to the International Museum of Ceramic Art and in 1999 with the generous support of University trustee Pam Joseph and her late husband Jay Schein the museum became known as: The Schein-Joseph International Museum of Ceramic Art at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. From May 2002 until May 2014 when a new director was appointed the Curator of Collections, Susan Kowalczyk, managed all aspects of the museum project.<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n

In the late spring of 2014 construction began on a building, designed by Kallmann, McKinnell and Wood of Boston, to house the ceramic art museum and, as a result, a completely new era for ceramic art at Alfred was initiated. Renamed Alfred Ceramic Art Museum by the Board of Trustees in February 2015 this new state of the art facility is the gift of visionary patron of the arts Marlin Miller (Dr. Marlin Miller, Jr. Alfred University alumnus \u201954, HD \u201989). The Alfred Ceramic Art Museum at Alfred University is now established as a new initiative under the directorial leadership of ceramic artist and educator Wayne Higby. The museum features an expanded educational mission as well as a commitment to enrich the artistic and scholarly dimensions of ceramic art while celebrating the visual arts in their entirety.<\/p>\r\n

The outstanding collection of graduate thesis work created by Alfred educated ceramic artists is unique in the world. It forms an important part of the collection and provides an especially significant view into the progressive development of American, contemporary ceramic art.<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n

In addition, the permanent collection has grown to include works by international ceramic artists such as Rosanjin, Hamada, Leach, Cardew and Rie as well as Chinese funerary jars, tomb sculpture from the Neolithic period, Roman and Byzantine lamps, Nigerian market pottery and the Krevolin Collection of Pottery of the Ancient Americas.<\/p>\r\n

The museum collection also features the work of numerous American ceramic art masters including the Alfred art school\u2019s renowned ceramic art faculty as well as - Ruth Duckworth, Ken Ferguson, Karen Karnes, Howard Kottler, Harrison MacIntosh, David Shaner, Robert Turner, Ken Price, Peter Voulkos, Beatrice Wood, Betty Woodman and Eva Zeisel to name just a few.<\/p>\r\n

This presentation features images of the Alfred, New York, USA rural landscape as well as the Alfred University campus, the famous Alfred kiln room, the Museum building designed by Kallmann, McKinnell and Wood architects and an overview of a few highlights of the collection including ancient and contemporary works of ceramic art.<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n
