Artist Statement – Johan Swart

My work is driven by a deep respect for clay as a medium of artistic expression and a desire to explore its full potential through innovative techniques, form, and texture. I am particularly interested in the intersection between function and art—where everyday objects are elevated through craftsmanship and intentional design. In my ceramics, I strive to create pieces that are not only practical but also spatially expressive and aesthetically compelling.

Rooted in the visual language of Africa, my work draws inspiration from the continent’s shapes, textures, and traditional techniques, while embracing a distinctly modern sensibility. I seek to honour historical context while pushing creative boundaries, allowing past and present to coexist in a meaningful dialogue through my practice.

Education and community engagement are integral to my journey as an artist. I regularly conduct workshops, sharing knowledge, cultivating emerging talent, and promoting broader appreciation for ceramic art. I view this as both a responsibility and a privilege—an opportunity to contribute to the cultural landscape and to inspire others to find expression in clay.
