Matt Watterson

Matt Watterson is an American ceramic artist who has been living and working full-time in Jingdezhen, China since 2018. His practice spans ceramic sculpture, functional porcelain tableware, ceramic furniture, and large-scale outdoor installations. Deeply rooted in material exploration, his works often draw inspiration from nature and the transformative processes of clay and fire — embracing both control and unpredictability as vital elements of creation.

Watterson’s approach balances intuition and structure. Whether shaping delicate porcelain leaves or constructing monumental stoneware forms, he explores how material, form, and texture can evoke a sense of connection — between people, between nature and culture, and between tradition and contemporary expression. His surfaces often bear traces of process, allowing chance and imperfection to mirror the organic qualities of the natural world.

Over the years, Watterson has exhibited extensively throughout China and internationally, with works appearing in solo and group exhibitions across Asia, Europe, and North America. His practice has evolved in dialogue with the vibrant ceramic community of Jingdezhen, where centuries of craft tradition meet a growing spirit of experimentation.

In addition to his studio practice, Watterson is the co-founder, along with artist Selina Chen, of KilnRoomJDZ International Ceramic Art Center, a creative platform dedicated to supporting cross-cultural exchange and artist residencies in Jingdezhen. Through both his art and his collaborative projects, Watterson continues to build bridges between cultures and disciplines, expanding the expressive possibilities of contemporary ceramics.
