My ceramic sculptures explore the intricate correlations between geological formations and social dynamics, with a particular focus on the pressures affecting women’s lives. I draw analogies between crystalline formations in glazes, developed through heat-induced atomic bonding, and the social upheavals triggered by conflicts within human societies.

Raised in a family of miners and geologists in the Aegean region, I was deeply inspired by the minerals and crystals brought home from the mines. This early exposure informed my glaze recipes, which incorporate diverse raw materials sourced from the earth. My work investigates chemical elements that complement each other, existing in a constant state of flux where opposing forces seek equilibrium. These molecular dynamics are reflected in the complex interactions within human societies, particularly regarding the contested roles and freedoms of women under patriarchal structures.

Historically, in conservative Anatolian societies, women communicated their desires, fears, and hopes through symbolic motifs embedded in textiles and embroidery. This covert visual language emerged as a response to the suppression of women’s open verbal expression. My sensitivity to these societal restrictions informs my artistic practice, which metaphorically represents the struggle for security, independence, and resilience amidst social and political pressures.

The biomorphic and metamorphic ceramic forms I create are shaped through hand-building, wheel-throwing, and mold-pressing techniques with porcelain and stoneware clay inspired by molecular alignments formed under heat and pressure on glaze surfaces. Employing mid- to high-fire glazes, I develop shiny, reflective crystalline formations that evoke depth, tension, humor, and hope. By harmonizing glossy and matte finishes, my work embodies a nuanced visual language that captures the complex, multidimensional reverberations of nature and human experience.
