Wisam Alsamad
Wisam Al-Samad is a Norwegian ceramic artist with Mesopotamian roots whose practice explores love, identity, and cultural memory through ceramic wall pieces and sculptural installations. Working with high-fired stoneware and lustre, he investigates how forms, surfaces, and materials can embody emotion, experience, and history.
His work brings Mesopotamia’s visual traditions into dialogue with Norwegian landscapes and cultural heritage, including rock carvings. Through organic and geometric forms, he explores connections between personal experience, nature, and a shared cultural history.
His colour palette draws on the rich hues of the East and the shifting light of the aurora borealis. Warm earth tones, deep blues and greens, and metallic surfaces create an interplay of light, movement, and emotional tension.
Al-Samad studied at the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad and the College of Fine Arts at the University of Baghdad. His exhibitions include Kunstnerforbundet in Oslo and Taoxichuan Art Museum in Jingdezhen, China (2026); RAM Gallery in Oslo, Telemark Kunstsenter, and the Aveiro International Biennale of Artistic Ceramics in Portugal (2025); KRAFT in Bergen and the International Ceramics Festival Mino in Japan (2024); and Ceramic Art Andenne in Belgium (2015).
His work is held in public and private collections, and he is a member of the International Academy of Ceramics (IAC). Alongside his studio practice, he leads educational activities for children, young people, and older adults, encouraging craftsmanship, creative participation, and community.
