Artist Statement: Femi Olajire Akande
My work explores the intersection of tradition, innovation, and philosophical inquiry through the transformative language of clay. Rooted in the Yoruba worldview, I draw upon indigenous aesthetics, moral philosophy, and cultural memory to engage with themes of identity, spirituality, and collective healing.
For me, ceramics is not merely a material but a living philosophy — a vessel of spirit, ethics, and transformation. I combine traditional Yoruba hand-building methods with contemporary approaches such as stoneware, glazing, and mixed clay bodies to create figurative, narrative-driven sculptures that bridge ancestral heritage and modern human experience.
At the heart of my practice lies Ìwàlẹ̀wà, the Yoruba moral philosophy that “character is beauty.” I interpret this idea as both a visual and ethical framework, redefining beauty as moral illumination, where peace, empathy, and integrity form the true aesthetic ideals.
My ceramics transcend their physical form to become moral vessels, embodying the Yoruba conviction that matter can hold spirit, and that true beauty reflects inner virtue. Clay, malleable and fragile, undergoes transformation through fire — a metaphor for the human journey toward moral refinement and spiritual awakening.
Through this vision, I position ceramics as a medium of healing, ethical reflection, and social renewal, affirming that the power of art lies not in ornament but in its capacity to shape conscience, restore community, and reveal the radiance within humanity.
