Gudrun Klix
Born in Germany, Gudrun Klix grew up in the Pacific NW of the USA and received her training in ceramics in the US where she studied and received her MFA at the University of Wisconsin- Madison. In 1981 she was offered a teaching position and of Head of Ceramics at the University of Tasmania- Hobart and three years later the Head of Ceramics position at Sydney College of the Arts, Sydney University. While there she was responsible for developing course work, teaching at all levels, as well as supervising post- graduates. Throughout Gudrun continued with own studio practice developing a number of large-scale installations as well as sculptural and vessel work. After retiring in 2006, Gudrun and her husband relocated to the Northern Rivers area of NSW where she continues her ceramic practice at a studio she and her husband developed.
The primary focus of Gudrun’s current work reflects on the exquisite beauty and fragility of the Australian landscape as well as the dangers of climate change, over-development and pollution that threaten to destroy its unique environment.
Gudrun’s work has been collected and acknowledged nationally and internationally. In 2010 her work “On the Table” was invited to be shown in the Philadelphia NCECA Invitational, and in 2011 it was awarded a Bronze Prize at the Gyeonggi International Ceramix Biennale in Korea. She has has lectured, participated in numerous symposiums, and residencies overseas including Banff, Canada; Flagstaff, Arizona; Kezcemet, Hungary; Salzburg/ Hallein, Austria; Höhr-Grenzhausen, Germany; and Walbrrzyck, Poland. She was Grand Prize winner in Ergon Energy Art Award 2008, winner of Muswellbrook Ceramic Award 2007; and first prize for indoor work at Harbour Sculpture, in 2015 (Sydney), NSW. Overall she has participated in well over 100 exhibitions world wide and her work has been published in numerous books and journals.
