Teo Huey Ling
Teo Huey Ling’s work includes drawings, contemporary sculptures and art installations. Being tremendously driven by intricate and laborious processes, the artist takes interest in learning and mastering technical skills to uncover the properties of the material she works with.
She thinks that her work is the partnership between the material, bonded through sensuous understanding and spontaneous responses.
Huey Ling ceramics artworks strives to achieve an ambiguous form that shift the biomorphic curve shapes through repetition, overlapping and juxtaposition. She has a few series with the ceramics material, the A Little Daydream, Amorphous, Convenes in Curves and recently In-Between Curves. Each series have their expanded versions in different materials from porcelain to wood. The latest series surpasses its predecessors yet maintains the exploration of the interplay between concave and convex curves form. Here, a secondary clay intertwines with porcelain, offering a visual contrast in texture and colour.
The artist develops her personal visual language through mastering various technical skills in hand-building, press-mould shapes, and slip-casting porcelain forms. But the overarching form is organic and involved a complex visual entity which unfolds an abstract shape at every angle to tease its viewer’s imagination and interpretation.
