Jenny Beavan

Connections perceived between the development of the Functional Ceramic Vessel and the Geological Vessel of the Earth leads me on a journey of exploration into changed states of matter. In particular processes of interdependence between water and geological change; causing disintegration, relocation and reformation.

I use simple tools and unconventional methods to integrate an imprint. This can be by encouraging mixes of opposing materials to dis-balance encouraging change during the processes of drying and firing. Fissures open, encrustations evolve and missing areas appear suggesting geological upheaval and the passage water takes in that process.
Experiential observations gained from my involvement with the China Clay Industry here in Cornwall, are of man harnessing water for every operation from transportation, separation and refinement until the drying process when water, is no longer required; water is then recycled. This sequence has become my methodology.

I equate water with the free spirit of porcelain sharing transparency, playfulness and memory. My intention when constructing is the introduction of fluidity and rhythm, working both decisively and tentatively, merging imagination with memory, looking for insights, surprise and revelation at every stage of the making process.
