John Shirley
Since 1970, my journey with clay has been one of continual discovery, rooted in a profound fascination with the interplay of light and form. Drawn to the ethereal qualities of translucency, I have dedicated my practice to exploring how light permeates and transforms ceramic surfaces.
Bone china, with its exceptional whiteness and translucency, serves as my primary medium. Its delicate nature challenges and inspires me, allowing for the creation of forms that capture and diffuse light in captivating ways. To enhance these luminous qualities, I employ soluble metallic salts as my principal surface treatment. These salts, absorbed into the ceramic body, interact to produce subtle, watercolor-like effects that evoke a sense of depth and fluidity
