Thomas Schmidt
My studio practice explores the evolving relationship between craft, materiality, and digital technology. As we increasingly operate through digital interfaces, I see craft as both a preservation of tactile experience and a site of technological innovation. By integrating digital fabrication with traditional ceramic processes, I challenge the boundaries between the handmade and the digital, the natural and the artificial, the physical and the virtual.
Through 3D scanning, printing, mold-making, and casting, I investigate how ceramics can mimic, distort, and reinterpret material surfaces, revealing how digital processes shape our perception of the physical world. My work positions ceramics within this tension—where material experimentation becomes a way to navigate the shifting balance between touch and technology, presence and simulation.
