Victor Agius
I am a multi-disciplinary artist working across ceramics, sculpture, painting, performance, video, and installation. Living and working in a tiny Mediterranean island of Gozo – Malta, a few meters away from the prehistoric Ġgantija Temples and Xagħra Stone Circle, I find inspiration in sites that carry the weight of deep time. Roaming the island like a nomad, I document rituals, witness cycles of excavation and construction, and collect earth—especially clay—as my materia prima. These materials, raw and immediate, root my practice in the tension between permanence and fragility.
My work reflects on our indebtedness to the earth and its endless consumption for the spiritual, the ritual, and the quotidian. Through clay’s volcanic, rugged textures and the organic forms of my ceramics, I attempt to expose matter in its primal essence, evoking landscapes that feel both archaic and yet eerily contemporary. I approach my practice as an archaeology of formless matter, where fragments of geology, ritual, and memory are unearthed and transformed.
At the heart of my inquiry lies a search for meaning within the Anthropocene. I question how humanity inscribes time into natural and built environments while simultaneously eroding them. Through my research into prehistoric temples, burial rites, Mediterranean folklore, and natural pigments shaped by erosion, I seek to connect personal landscapes to universal existential themes—birth, life, death, and regeneration.
Ultimately, my work does not provide answers but creates spaces of encounter—between matter and spirit, ruin and ritual, the elemental and the ethereal—where the earth itself becomes both witness and participant in our becoming.
