Yuhang XIE

Yuhang Xie is a faculty member at the College of Ceramics and Design, Beibu Gulf University, Guangxi, China. In her youth, she was deeply influenced by the painting traditions of her family elders. She majored in Glass Art and Ceramic Art within the field of Craft Art during her undergraduate studies and earned a Master’s degree in Ceramic Art from Jilin University of Arts in 2021. Her journey with ceramics began in university, where she was drawn to various craft art disciplines such as ceramics, glass art, metalworking, fiber art, and lacquer painting. Among these, ceramic art captivated her the most. She remarks, “Clay possesses distinct plasticity at different stages, and the forming methods and firing temperatures profoundly impact the final work. This interplay between inevitability and chance resonates with my personal growth, and it fascinates me.” This deep connection led her to pursue further studies in ceramics during her master’s program. Under the mentorship of Professor Wang Shengli, she was inspired by his Chinese ink paintings, prints, and highly personalized ceramic landscape sculptures. Immersed in traditional Chinese culture, she developed her own artistic methodology—conceptual ceramics. Her works, such as Compendium of Materia Medica · Teapot, Nourishment, and Tao Te Ching · Teapot, which incorporate elements of ancient Chinese classics, represent her initial explorations in conceptual ceramic art.The city where she works is rich in marine resources and canal culture, providing her with abundant creative inspiration. Her pieces Deep Sea Creatures and Sorrow of the Sea utilize the distinctive smoke-blackening firing technique unique to Qinzhou Nixing pottery to explore the relationship between humans and nature, emphasizing the importance of reverence and gratitude toward the natural world. Nurtured by the creative environment of Qinzhou Nixing pottery, she takes great delight in the endless surprises that clay brings to her artistic practice.
