Sofia Donovan
I conceive my artistic practice as both a speculative and material inquiry into transformation. Working primarily with ceramic and collage, I explore the tension between organic forces—time, erosion, growth—and the human impulse to contain, preserve, and give form.
My work emerges through processes of intuition, accident, and controlled collapse. I allow materials to crack, warp, and destabilize, embracing fragmentation as both a formal language and a conceptual framework. Each rupture becomes generative: a site where new structures, meanings, and emotional narratives take shape.
Across my practice, I return to the aesthetics of ruin—not as an endpoint, but as a condition of becoming. These works reflect on impermanence, memory, and the unstable nature of existence, where destruction and creation are inseparable. Surfaces oscillate between smoothness and fracture, containment and dispersal, evoking an inner landscape shaped by tension, vulnerability, and resilience.
Ultimately, my work seeks to give form to forces that exceed control: to hold, however briefly, the fragile balance between order and disintegration.
