Srinia Chowdhury
I was born to educated, liberal Bengali parents and raised in New Delhi — a city that offered freedom and fear in equal measure. At home, I was encouraged to think, question, and create; outside, I learned caution within patriarchal expectations. This tension between openness and restraint shaped my need to examine identity and belonging.
As a storyteller, my work explores the fragile tension between identity, societal expectations, and the constructs of binary gender roles. I investigate the dichotomy between childhood innocence and the societal pressures of adulthood, delving into the struggles of self-acceptance and the search for identity in a world that relentlessly shapes how we perceive ourselves.
Through clay, I challenge taboos and the scrutiny placed on women while celebrating their resilience. Like eyes that both reflect and absorb judgment, my sculptures embody narratives of rebellion, self-discovery, humour, and vulnerability—inviting viewers to question conformity and embrace imperfection.
Influenced by Indian art, culture, Pop Art, mythology, and fairytales, my transition from bronze to ceramics in 2016 opened new creative possibilities—allowing me to sculpt, draw, and paint within one medium, and to reinterpret contemporary norms with wit, imagination, and empathy.
