Andrés Monzón
Drawing from the iconography and craft traditions of the Northern Andes and the global south, Asicaz Monzón-Aguirre Ortiz creates sculptures and installations that reframe how material culture mediates identity, queerness, and remembrance. Their work merges ceramics, textiles, and other materials into hybrid forms that explore concealment, transformation, and the symbolic coding of objects. Centering the aesthetic legacies of postcolonial and diasporic histories, they approach sculpture as a site of cultural recovery and reimagination.
Their work has been shown internationally in solo and group exhibitions, including Frieze LA (2023), Reinventing the Rest at Maximillian William (London), Aún por nombrar at Galería Santa Fe (Bogotá), and will appear in the upcoming Bienal Internacional de Arte de Antioquia y Medellín (2025). Recent solo shows include Égida (Stars Gallery, LA), Openwork (National College of Arts, Lahore), and the forthcoming Gruta (Museo de Arte y Antropología, Jericó).
Their sculptures are part of public collections including the RISD Museum and the Museo de Antioquia. Asicaz is the founding director of the Campos de Gutiérrez Foundation in Medellín and currently serves as Colombia’s representative to the International Academy of Ceramics.
