Born in 1978 in Ivory Coast, where I spent my childhood, I have lived in Liège, Belgium, since my teenage years. I discovered ceramics at sixteen, and it quickly became an obsession. I trained in the conservation and restoration of works of art, spending years giving damaged objects a second life before dedicating myself entirely to creating my own. I learned from books, artist residencies, generous craftspeople—and mostly from kilns full of failed sculptures. My legendary impatience did not survive the process.
I am interested in the stories, images, objects, and forms of language that societies pass down from one generation to the next—not because they belong to the past, but because they continue to shape the present. Fairy tales, myths, iconographies, archives, popular beliefs, idioms, and songs are not my subject; they are the materials through which I explore the cultural imaginaries that shape the way we see the world and find our place within it. Each body of work begins with one of these sources. Rather than illustrating them, I rewrite them to generate new readings of contemporary realities. While many of my current projects take the feminine experience as their point of departure, they form part of a broader reflection on how forms of cultural transmission shape our relationship to the body, power, nature, the living world, and one another. By bringing new images into being, my work seeks less to rewrite the past than to open up new ways of imagining the future.
