Srinia Chowdhury
I grew up in New Delhi in a liberal Bengali household — a city that offered freedom and fear in equal measure. At home, I was encouraged to think, question, and create; outside, I learned caution within patriarchal expectations. This tension between openness and restraint shaped my need to investigate identity, belonging, and the politics of perception.
As a storyteller, my work explores the dichotomy between childhood innocence and the societal pressures of adulthood, delving into questions of gender, vulnerability, self-acceptance, and the pressure to conform. Through clay, I challenge taboos and the scrutiny placed on women while celebrating their resilience, humour, and complexity.
I often blend satire, symbolism, and phantasmagoria to create layered sculptural narratives that feel both playful and unsettling. Eyes frequently appear in my work as witnesses, mirrors, and carriers of judgment — reflecting the tension between how we see ourselves and how society sees us.
Influenced by Indian art, culture, Pop Art, mythology, and fairytales, my transition from bronze to ceramics in 2016 transformed my practice, allowing me to sculpt, draw, and paint within a single medium while building narrative worlds that reinterpret contemporary norms with wit, imagination, and empathy.
