Brian Molanphy
Brian Molanphy’s attention to flux, endurance, transgression, & history informs his art, first accomplished through books & muck. As a bookmaker & baker, he learned to apprehend the world through containers. Coupled with the muck of paper pulp, printer’s ink, pastry cream, & bread dough, containment led to ceramics. In addition to American venues such as the Nasher Sculpture Center, the Kimbell Art Museum, & the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, exhibitions include venues in Asia, Europe, & North America. These & other publications are documented on his website.
He was graduated magna cum laude with Distinction in Art from Colorado College. A University Fellowship provided for an M.F.A. in Ceramics from Pennsylvania State University (PSU). Fellowships from the Fulbright Commission, the Camargo Foundation, & the Brown Foundation brought him to France. He taught at Colorado College, PSU, & the Alberta College of Art & Design (ACAD) & he now teaches at Southern Methodist University (SMU) where he is Professor of Art in the Meadows School of the Arts. Sam Taylor Fellowships as well as SMU’s President’s Partners grant, University Research Council grants, Meadows Summer Fellowship, Meadows Faculty Development grants, & Division of Art grants have supported his artistic production nationally & internationally, especially in Taiwan. Molanphy has lectured & participated in panel discussions for the Newberry Library, the Franco-American Commission for Educational & Cultural Exchange, the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA), the Nasher Sculpture Center, as well as several universities. Molanphy is a member of Phi Beta Kappa & is represented in public & private collections in North America, East Asia, & Europe.
