Studio DeSimoneWayland
Studio DeSimoneWayland, founded by Marcello De Simone and Bruce Wayland, has operated since 2010 in Amsterdam, exploring the intersection of ceramics and textiles.
Drawing on the history of domestic tableware, including platters, plates, and archaic forms, the studio transforms functional shapes into sculptural canvases, combining them with embroidered fabrics to create layered narratives.
Each form carries historical memory—was it once a dish for bones, or for pickles?—becoming both a sculptural element and storytelling medium.
For over twelve years, the studio has developed innovative mould-making techniques for slip-cast ceramics, integrating textile textures into stoneware and fine porcelain.
Their series From a Different Cloth and Soft Porcelain exemplify this practice, merging fabric structure with ceramic surfaces.
Antique linens and family monograms embedded in Mont Blanc porcelain evoke the liminal space between art and design, old and new, personal and collective memory.
Recent recognition includes inclusion in the Homo Faber Guide (2022), participation in Homo Faber: The Journey of Life in Venice (2024), and partnership with Craft Council Nederland (2025), culminating in a Dutch Design Week installation spelling “PEACE” through embroidered letters.
