Simone Fraser
My work is a contemporary response to the ancient tradition of the vessel.
I see my forms as icons- symbols or metaphors for my story. Like all stories it is a melting pot of references, from the fossil, the archaeological, my physical environment to contemporary culture. It’s also about our senses, our reaction to texture, to colour, to beauty.
The ubiquitous nature of the vessel means that it is a conduit- familiar to everyone- it opens up an immediate dialogue with the viewer who can then focus on the content and ideas within it.
The work is coil thrown, manipulating and texturing as I work with quick burner drying. Through this process I try to capture the inherent natural movement of clay. Texture, slips and finally a number of painterly thin applications of dry glazes are layered onto the work, culminating with multiple firings.
